Description

This map of Lviv, created for the German Army, shows the main transportation routes and strategically important buildings in the city.

The map is not dated; best estimates would be that it was made in 1939.

The map, created by the German General Staff of Ground Forces, 9th Division, was not intended for public use.

E. Romer Cartographic Institute Atlas’s Map of Lviv (Plan miasta Lwowa) printed by Knyzhnytsya-Atlas (Książnica-Atlas) in 1931 was used as the basis for this map.

Legend:

  • In the lower right corner of the map is the name: “Lemberg” (Lemberg), a graphic and fractional depiction of the map’s scale and an explanation of symbols.
  • In the upper left corner is an alternate name: “Transportation Map of Lemberg (Lwow)” (Verkehrsplan Lemberg (Lwów).
  • In the left lower corner is information about the map’s author: German General Staff of Ground Forces, 9th Division (Generalstab des Heeres 9. Abt) and an additional list of symbols explained.
  • Along the right hand side of the map there is a list of streets and squares in the city and surrounding areas (Straßenverzeichnis).
