"This is a picture of my mother, Natalia Ksaverova (on the right), her best friend Olha Moskalets (in the middle), and their colleague. My mother was a welding engineer by profession and at that time worked in a department that issued permits for the operation of industrial boilers, as I now understand. Back then it took me a year only to learn by heart the abbreviated name of this infernal institution to be able to answer the question "where does your mother work?" This photo was taken in their office, which was located in a basement in an old house in Pechersk. In the photo everyone has curly hair, which was almost obligatory among my parents and their acquaintances. My mom's wool blouse was dark blue. The watch on the chain she’s wearing was actually one of her favorite things back then. It was an electronic watch in the form of a small cylinder. She did not buy it but just found it on the street no more than a year before this photo. Electronic watches were very fashionable at the time, and the fact that such an elegant and unusual thing belonged to her made all her colleagues jealous".
