Description

It’s a picture of my granny Tetyana Zaharieva as a guest at wedding with her friend Halya Buhanets in her home village Valuivka. They are bridesmaids. That’s why they are wearing a “wedding ribbon”. Halya is wearing actually two headscarves because she was related to newlyweds. Both are wearing “gauze” fabric headscarves which was the latest fashion then and jackets with dresses sewn by a local seamstress, the only one in a village. She was called Nyunia (actually Nastya Panchenko, but everybody called her Nyunka). She had a foot-operated sewing machine and lots of orders. She would always treat you with candies which were always on the table, which was regarded highly unusual in the village. She was Odesa-born beautiful plump woman. Her husband was a teacher in elementary school. In the picture my granny is wearing a polka dot dress from staple fabric with a “japanese” sleeve and low waistline. She wore it for ten years at least”.
