The idea of creating a gymnastics society first appeared in 1866; already in the spring of the following year, the founding meeting of “Sokil” took place in the meeting hall of the Lviv City Council. The first chairman of the society was doctor Y. Milleret, and the deputy chairman was Count Alexander Fredro. Sokil's headquarters were located at 11 Yagellonska Street (V. Hnatiuka Street), and later at the Gecht Casino on the Mayrivka side (Sichovykh Striltsiv Street). With the start of construction of the Galician Sejm (1877), Sokil moved to rented premises at 7 Kurkova Street (Lysenko Street).
