- The film contains footage of the summer vacation of employees of the O. Dovzhenko Film Studio. 1) 00:00:03 – 00:01:49 — Families with children enjoying leisure outdoor time: cooking, boating on the river. Close-up of Oleh Chornyi. “We used to go on holidays to another place—in the Kaniv region, in the village of Buchak. After ‘our’ places there were partially flooded, our parents and their friends had to look for a new location for their summer vacations. We found one in the Chernihiv region, almost on the Belarusian border, near the village of Mniov. The group consisted mainly of employees of the Dovzhenko Film Studio. They would go out, set up a tent camp, and spend their summer vacations there.” Commentary by Oleh Chornyi. 2) 00:01:50 – 00:05:59 — Kyiv. Gathering at the Memorial of Eternal Glory. Vacationers load their belongings into a boat and sail to the campsite. “In August, my parents and their friends rented a truck from the studio to transport boxes of supplies and a minibus for the passengers. My father’s old friend and comrade, Viktor Vasylievych Beze, worked as the head of the film studio’s motor transport department, so arranging a vehicle was easy for him. Gasoline was cheap at the time, and almost no one owned a private car. Large vehicles were needed to transport all those huge quantities of supplies.” Commentary by Oleh Chornyi. 4) 00:08:56 – 00:10:26 — Panorama of tents and vacationers. We dug cellars and toilets and reinforced the tents. We lived in tents for the entire month, cooking on stoves powered by gas cylinders that we had brought with us.” Commentary by Oleh Chornyi. 5) 00:10:28 – 00:19:51 — Families having lunch outdoors. Playing with the dog. “Preparations for the vacation began almost immediately after the New Year holidays, because it was necessary to stock up on food. A significant part of it consisted of canned goods that were in short supply at the time—‘Tourist Breakfast’, cereals—as well as other necessities such as flashlight batteries, transistor radios, fishing line, and hooks. These items were difficult to find in stores, so people had to hunt for them and gradually accumulate them for the summer vacation. A month or two before departure, the packing began.
