Description
The Main Train Station in Lviv was constructed in 1899-1904 on the site of the original Lviv Station (1861) by the Ivan Levynskyi construction company, following a project by Professor Władysław Sadłowski. The project had been completed in 1890 on the basis of information and specifications presented by Ludwik Wierzbicki, head of the railway and author of the project of the original station. Many people participated in working on the project, including experienced railway engineers Ju. Vysotskyi and F. Rybicki; senior commissioners E. Cyprian and A. Zazulia; architects A. Zacharewicz, K. Rzeczycki, H. Jabłoński, Ju. Hornung, I. Kendzerski and T. Talowski. The train station was completed and given to the city for use on March 26, 1904. At the time it was one of the biggest and most spectacular train stations in Europe. A long tram track for tram routes KD and LD led up to the new station, coming up directly to the main entrance. A flower-bed with a fountain in the middle was laid before the entrance to the station.
