Description

The Church of St. Nicholas from the village of Kryvka, Turkiv County, Lviv Voivodeship, built by an unknown master in 1763, was the first exhibit of the future Museum of Folk Architecture and Life in Lviv.

This pearl of wooden architecture was brought to Lviv for the monastery of O.O. Studites and installed on the Kaiserwald in 1930. The initiator of the preservation and transportation of the unique wooden church to Lviv was the famous Ukrainian art historian Mykhailo Dragan. The church was restored (in fact, assembled anew) by folk masters T. Dzhuryn and P. Demkiv.

After World War II, the most famous Lviv scientists, writers, and artists took the initiative to create an open-air museum of folk architecture, but only in 1971 was the Museum of Folk Architecture and Life established, which was in the field of activity Ministry of Culture of the Ukrainian SSR.

Today, the Museum of Folk Architecture and Life "Shevchenko Grove", located at 1 Chernecha Hora Street, on 60 hectares of the Znesinnia Landscape Park, has 124 monuments of folk art. The open-air exhibition is located in six ethnographic zones.
