The fountain with the figure of Diana has been located in the southeastern corner of Rynok Square for almost 200 years. The fountains with mythological figures were erected by the outstanding Lviv sculptor Hartman Witwer around 1810-1814. After many years of uncertainty about the date of the fountains' construction, the work of G. Witwer was dated by the brilliant expert and researcher of Lviv sculpture, Dr. Yuriy Biryulyov. Its dating is confirmed by the first mention of the existence of market fountains - January 1815. It was then that the city council issued an order prohibiting damage to sculptures on fountains during the celebration of Jordan, which traditionally took place on the Rynok. The sculptures on the fountains, made of limestone, were allegories of the Earth (Diana and Adonis) and water (Neptune and Amphitrite). Diana is the goddess of the Moon in Roman mythology, the patroness of birth and hunting; in In Greek mythology, her counterpart is Artemis, the twin sister of Apollo, who belonged to the circle of the twelve main Olympian gods. Diana's indispensable attributes are a bow and arrows, her favorite animal is a doe, and her favorite drink is spring water.
