“It’s a picture of my grandfather Ivan Myronovych and grandmother Olena Konstiantynivna of family Avramenko. Unlike her husband Olena was of ‘non-proletarian ancestry’. When she was a child her parents were executed by a firing squad. After that she was sent to an orphanage. In the 1970s when it became fashionable to wear headscarves on put-up hairstyles tying them down under the chin, she fought against this trend by constantly saying to her daughters: girls, you are city residents! Put your hats on!”.
