Description

The photo shows a fragment of the central gate of the Polish memorial complex, which was called the Orlyat cemetery. During the Soviet era, the issue of the existence of the memorial was carefully hushed up, with the connivance of the authorities, the tombstones were destroyed and desecrated; in independent Ukraine, the issue of rebuilding the cemetery became extremely acute and painful. Let us turn to the history of the construction of the complex: in 1921, a competition was announced for the design of the Orlyat Cemetery, in which the project of a young engineer, architecture student of the Lviv Polytechnic, Rudolf Indrukh, won. The memorial was built over many years, the first stage of the project was the construction of a chapel, the cornerstone of which was laid on June 26, 1922. The dedication of the chapel, which for a long time was the central object of the Orlyat cemetery, took place on September 28, 1924. The monument to American aviators was solemnly opened On May 30, 1925, the construction of the catacombs continued until October 1932. On April 28, 1929, the ceremony of consecrating the cornerstone of the Glory Monument took place, the ceremonial opening of which, extremely magnificently arranged, took place on November 11, 1934. The inscription above the gate of the 12-column portico read: “Mortui, sunt ut liberi vivamus”. The final touch was the opening of the monument to the French infantrymen, erected near the right wing of the catacombs and opened on May 26, 1938. The author of the photograph is a Lviv native, a colonel in the Polish army, an amateur photographer, a member of the Lviv Photographic Society and its secretary in the late 1930s, Leon Chekhovych.
