Description
The year 1938. Deaf woodcutter Stefan works in the Carpathians. Hard work and beatings from a cruel supervisor are interrupted by a tragic accident - a felled tree falls on Stefan. After his injury, he begs in Lviv. Deaf Mariika went to the city in search of a better life and works in a laundry. She meets Stefan on the street. The year 1939. The Soviet takeover of Lviv gives Stefan and Mariika housing, bread, and work, and forces the Poles to flee. Mariika works as an apple picker on a collective farm. The couple gives birth to a daughter, Rada, but their family life is interrupted by the Nazi occupation of Lviv. The Year 1941. A Nazi soldier comes to Mariika and Stefan's house and opens fire on the family because of Stefan's resistance. Rada loses her parents and her hearing. Rescued by a Soviet soldier, she is sent to a boarding school for the deaf. The Year 1947. Rada begins a friendship with a boy named Mykola. As a young girl, she works as a seamstress, performs in amateur groups, and continues to correspond with her childhood love. The central symbol of the film is an apple tree planted by the girl. This tree, which grows with her, becomes a place of memories and new hopes, to which she always returns. This film was the winner of the All-Union Festival of Amateur Art (1967).
