In 1883, on the 200th anniversary of the Vienna Resistance, the city council decided to erect a monument in honor of the hero of this event. The author of the monument to King Jan III Sobieski was the famous Polish sculptor, a Lviv native, Tadeusz Baroncz; the model was cast by the Viennese foundry of Arthur Krupp, and the work on the construction of the pedestal was carried out by the sculpture workshop of the sculptor Julian Markowski in Lviv. The grand opening of the monument took place on November 20, 1898. In 1950, the monument was transported to Poland and installed in Gdansk.
