Description

Krakivska Square, or Krakivy, has been a trading center since ancient times, thanks to its location—first under the ancient Krakivska Gate, and later at the intersection of important trade routes. The oldest main streets, Horodotska and Zhovkivska (formerly known as Krakivska and Volynska roads), began at this square. There has always been a market on the square, and in the 19th century, it became more civilized. Photographs from the mid-19th century show typical market stalls—benches with awnings, of which there were many on the square. At the end of the 19th century, when Lviv entered the era of municipal self-government, the city council faced the issue of organizing the territory and arranging markets convenient for citizens. The City Market, or City Trade Bazaar, on Krakivska Square was built in 1876 by the Viennese firm End & Horn. A large pavilion made of iron and brick was erected on a brick foundation and covered with corrugated galvanized iron. The bazaar was equipped with asphalt walkways and ventilation, and had 76 shops (the leases for which were raffled off) for butchers, grocers, bakers, and for the sale of dairy products and vegetables. The construction of this model market, together with its restoration after the fire of 1894, cost 63,544 zlotys.
