Description

In 1912, attention of Lviv residents was captured by a new, unfamiliar attraction, which was constructed close to the high castle: Luna Park. A well-known series of photographs of the amusement park was taken by Lviv photographer and cinematographer Marek Münz. The world's first Luna Park was an amusement part on Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York, which operated from 1903 to 1944. The park was named in honor of the winged ship, part of the "Flight to the Moon" attraction at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, which was a huge success with visitors. Following the example of this new amusement park with many attractions, similar parks opened around the world in 1912. Lviv was no exception. In 1912, Luna Park was built on the northeastern slop of Piskova Mountain, designed by English architects Thomas McDowell and Arthur Leverack. There were many attractions, restaraunts, summer terraces, and an observation deck overlooking Znesinnia.
