The main station of the State Railway in Lviv was constructed in 1901-1903 after a project by the architect Prof. Władysław Sadłowski. The photograph presents the main building of the train station shortly after its construction was completed. The fronton is crowned by a sculptural composition by Petro Viytovych, on either side of the portal are allegorical sculptures of Industry and Trade by Antoni Popiel. The main gate at the central entrance was built of forged iron by a Kraków-based company of Józef Górecki following sketches by Prof. Sadłowski. The train station took its first train on March 26, 1904. This was one of the biggest terminals in Austria-Hungary, sending 94 trains to 7 directions out from its platforms daily.
