The postcard shows Ivan Franko Street (Strada Constantin Brancoveanu in Romanian, Liliengasse in Austrian times) at the corner of Mickiewicz Street (one of the few streets in Chernivtsi that did not change its name!).
Ivan Franko Street is an important street downtown Chernivtsi which connects The Central Square (Piata Unirii, Ringplatz) with Soborna Square (P.Ghica Voda, Austriaplatz). Until the second world war the building with the partly wooden balconies on the left was known as Mathildenhof, it offers a passage way to Holovna Street (Str.Regina Maria, Rathausstrasse). The pharmacy on the corner was called “Mandelbaum Apotheke” until the second World War. It still exists.
Helmut Kusdat
