The photograph shows the beginning of Novyi Svit (S. Bandery) Street at its junction with Sikstuska (Doroshenko) Street in the district of the same name. The photograph was taken shortly before the construction of the Lviv Polytechnic building - an institution that became a catalyst for the development of Lviv in the late 19th - early 20th centuries. The photographer immortalized the archaic appearance of the southwestern suburban area of Lviv. The most significant buildings of Novyi Svit at that time were the church and monastery of St. Mary Magdalene, as well as the old arsenal of the Senyavskys. Only in the last quarter of the 19th century did the development and development of this Lviv “Wild West” begin - a district that still retains its great attractiveness and is considered almost the center of the city. In 1886, the name “Novyi Svit” remained only for the district, and the street was renamed in honor of the public figure, honored Lviv citizen Prince Leon Sapieha.
