Description

Akademichna Street, Lviv's main promenade, connected the newly created squares - Mariatska and Akademichna. The street was named after the university (the former Academy). The first mention of it (then called Garbarska) dates back to 1569. From the beginning of the 19th century, it was called St. Jan Street, after the statue of St. Jan Nepomuk that stood on the bridge over the Poltva River. Until 1871, the middle of the street was occupied by the open Poltva River, with St. John's Street on the left and St. John's Street on the right. In 1890, after the Poltva River was finally covered, the middle of the street was planted with trees.
