Description

“Red Monastery” – barracks in 1890. The caption is incorrect; the photograph was taken around 1870 and shows the Franz Joseph Infantry Barracks, built around 1850–1851 on Franciscan Square, between Carmelite and Kurkova Streets (now Prosvity and Lysenka Streets)." This building at 12 Kurkova Street housed one of the battalions of the Galician Infantry Regiment. There are a number of discrepancies regarding the name of the barracks at different times (1860-1914). At the time the photo was taken, they were named after Franz Joseph, as confirmed by contemporary maps of Lviv.
