The building, which belonged to the banking house “Gausner and Violand,” was one of the most beautiful in the city at the beginning of the 19th century. The left wing on the side of Sherokaya Street (now Kopernika Street) was built in 1809–1811; the right wing was built in 1821–1822. The author of the project is still unknown, but it is assumed that the authors of the reliefs decorating the facade are the famous Lviv sculptors Hartmann Witwer and Anton Schymzer. At various times, the building housed financial, postal, and judicial authorities. In the mid-19th century, Archduke Karl Ludwig lived here. During World War II, the building was destroyed, then rebuilt and used as a residential building.
