It is the oldest credit institution in Galicia, established on the initiative of the Provincial Estates in 1842. At the beginning of its existence, it was located at 2 Mayerska Street (now Sichovykh Striltsiv Street). In 1889–1891, on the site of the former “English” hotel at 15 Karla-Ludwiga Street (Svobody Ave.), a spectacular monumental building of the Galician Savings Bank was built according to the design of the outstanding Polish architect, professor, and rector of Lviv Polytechnic Julian Octavian Zacharevich. Today, it houses the Museum of Ethnography and Artistic Crafts of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
