The photo shows an old, one-story house dating back to the first generation of stone buildings in Chernivtsi in the first half of the 19th c. The piece of land it stood on was in the city center and bordered on Tomasczukgasse (Str. Tomasciuc, vul. Skovorody), Rothkirchgasse (Str. Gramada, vul. Lysenka) and Goethegasse (Str. Goethe) The building must have been demolished by 1910. When the photo was taken, the house was already surrounded by modern buidings which still exist: in the distance the entrance to the residence of the Greek-orthodox bishop can be seen, finished in 1882. The building on the right side was the original home of the University, founded in 1875. The building on the other side of Universitätsgasse (Str. Universitatii, vul. Universytetska) was built in 1883 in order to accomodate the faculty for natural sciences. Today it is called “building nr. 2” and houses the faculty of law. Helmut Kusdat
