Description
The monument to Stalin at an agricultural exhibition in Lviv on 22 March 1953, photographed after the death of Stalin. The monument was situated to the left of the main alley of the park (to the left, a monument to Lenin was constructed); the author of it is unknown. In March of 1953, after the death of Stalin, a mourning meeting was held in the park where thousands of Lviv citizens were gathered. In the Lviv guidebook, published in 1960, the monuments to Lenin and Stalin in the park are still mentioned. The Bohdan Khmelnytsky Culture and Recreation Park was officially opened in 1952. The park, with an area of 25 hectares, was arranged in place of former brickworks located between Dzerzhynskoho (earlier Pelchynska; from 1991 Vitovskoho) and Stryiska streets. In the upper part of the park, from the side of Stryiska street, agricultural exhibitions were held regularly till 1965. A complex of wooden and stone pavilions was constructed there under a project drawn up by Lviv architects Yaroslav Novakivsky, Petro Kont, Anatoliy Konsulov and I. Bazarnyk. To the right of the main alley and of the monument to Stalin, the Green Theatre (1800 seats) was constructed on the hill slope; it was an open-air theatre enclosed by a delicate fence. A football field with stands for 4000 persons was arranged to the left of the main alley and of the monument to Lenin, behind the exhibition pavilions. A summer stage was constructed on the area formed by the pavilions; a complex of children’s playgrounds was situated nearby. The monument to Stalin was dismantled in 1956-1957.
