The image shows one of the stages of construction of the Lviv Opera House. With the expiration in 1892 of the Skarbek privilege, under which theatrical performances had been held at the Skarbek Theater since 1842, a commission was created by the city council to resolve the issue of the theater's existence. The result of its work was a verdict on the unsuitability of further use of the theater hall and a decision on the need to build a representative theater building worthy of Lviv. The site chosen for construction was Golukhovsky Square at its intersection with Hetmanskie Valy. The construction of the theater was also intended to change the appearance of the square and the organization of urban space. In 1895, a competition was announced for the best theater building design, which was won by construction advisor and director of the Industrial School, architect Zygmunt Gorgolewski. Construction work began in mid-1897 and was carried out by I. Levinsky's architectural and construction firm. The theater building, with a capacity of 2,000 spectators, was completed in October 1900. The building covered an area of 3,000 square meters. The construction of the Grand Theater, which is still one of the most beautiful buildings in the city, cost 2,500,000 crowns, or $500,000. With its construction, Golukhovsky Square ceased to exist as such – the building completely filled the entire area, the adjacent houses were restored, and the flower beds in front of the theater were landscaped. The theater building was visible from afar, from the beginning of Hetmansky Val on Mariatska Square, it closed the avenue du teatre.
