In 1880 in honor of Emporer Franz Joseph's visit to Lviv, the entrance of Lviv City Hall was decorated with a temporary archway featuring allegorical figures of Hospitality, Courage, and Patriotism by the sculptor Leonardo Marconi. During the restoration of city hall in 1928, the portal was demounted, leaving only the central figure of the composition. Stone lions, works by Polish sculptor Tadeusz Baroncz, stood on both sides of the archway. The photograph, taken by the famous Lviv-born photographer Adam Lenkevich, was probably intended to be featured on postcards, which were published with his photo's from 1930 to 1939.
