Numerous petitions from the city authorities and the Galician Sejm to the Austro-Hungarian government regarding the addition of a medical department to Lviv University were granted in 1891. With the assistance of the governor of Galicia, Count Baden, the university received a medical faculty—the Medical Department. The city authorities provided land on Pekarska Street for construction and a subsidy, and the government undertook to build and equip the educational complex. In 1894, the first three buildings were constructed at 52 Pekarska Street according to a design by Józef Braunseis: the main building for descriptive anatomy and physiology; on the left, the building for forensic medicine; and on the right, the building for pathology, chemistry, and pharmacology. The medical faculty was established in 1894 by transferring several departments from the philosophy department: pharmacognosy, human anatomy, hygiene, and human physiology.
