Part of Rynok Square
- ID: 175
- Place: Lviv
- Date: 1860-1870
The Synagogue of the Progressists or the Temple of Israel was built in 1843-1846 in the center of the oldest Lviv square, Stary Rynok. It is assumed that the author of the project was architect F. Levytsky. Architect Johann Salzmann was appointed responsible for the construction work. The model for the building was the Viennese Temple on Seitenstättengasse. It was destroyed by the Nazis during World War II. Part of Zhovkivska Street in front of the Temple was called Auf der Bruck, which indicates that somewhere here, maybe even along Zhovkivska, some tributary of the Poltva flowed, over which a bridge was thrown to Stary Rynok Square. Until 1843, the so-called small fire guardhouse - die Feierpikete - was located on Stary Rynok Square, which was moved to Zamarstynivska Street (to the construction of the barracks) before the construction of the Temple.
